Atrium Chair
2024

The Atrium Chair was developed as part of a photography project that captures the essence of Casa del Atrio, a private residence designed by architect Antonio Attolini. Presented through the lens of Alejandro Ramírez Orozco, this editorial series highlights the interplay between the house and a selection of new works by fourteen designers and artists working in Mexico. Each piece was created to align with the aesthetic and spatial language of the house, fostering a cohesive dialogue between design and architecture.

Inspired by cantilever construction systems, the Atrium Chair reflects Attolini’s pursuit of essentiality. Designed to function with only the most indispensable structural elements, it engages a balance between humility and generosity, establishing a direct conversation with the formal nature of the space. Crafted from ash wood stained in a violet hue, the chair represents a primitive iteration of my previous cantilever design from 2021—simplified and refined into a more direct, rational language. The absence of front legs grants it a secondary function: it can be suspended over surfaces, such as a table, further emphasizing its structural logic.
This project not only celebrates materiality, form, and narrative but also reintroduces the human scale as an essential element. The resulting series of photographs, showcased during Mexico City Art Week 2025, documents the relationship between objects, architecture, and the people inhabiting the space—offering a layered perspective on design as both an artistic and functional gesture.
